Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I choose your service?

If you hire me your not just getting a website designer, you're getting your own personal nerd. I'll be here to answer a plethora of questions, anything relating to your site, not just the design.

I like updating my site myself. Do I get access to it?

Yes. If you want to you can update the site on your own without having to go through me. You will have full FTP access to your site. You will also have access to cPanel for fine tuning things to your liking.

What will I need to provide for you to create my site?

I will handle all the design, layout, and technical task, but you need to provide me with the raw information. You'll need to provide me with the text and images you want on your site. So, if you want a description of your family, you'll have to write it. If you want your family photos online, you'll have to send them to me. I'll handle everything else, all you need to do is provide the content.

How long does it take for you to create my site?

That depends on how how many other people I have, and how urgently you need your site. If you're in a rush and need your site by, say, yesterday, I can have a site created in as little as 48 hours.[1]

Do you charge to update my site?

Not in most cases. If you need an occasional update or change to your site I'll do it free of charge. If, on the other hand, you regularly need updates I may charge a slight fee. An example of a site that needs changing often would be a Churches' website. If they want their site updated every week with sermon notes or events that may cost a few extra dollars a month. If you will need your website updated often please be sure to include that information when requesting a price quote.

Can you help me accept Credit Card payments online?

Not directly. Directly accepting credit card payments requires a lot of paper work, and generally people are only comfortable giving their Credit Card information to large corporate sites. If you want to accept credit card payments or donations I highly recommend you use a third party service such as PayPal or 2Checkout. Using their services is both easier, and safer for your site's users.

Aren't there tools to allow me to create my own site even if I don't know how?

Yes there is software and websites that claim to allow anyone to create a website. And they can, just not a very good one. There's a huge difference between a mass-produced cookie-cutter website and a professionally designed website personally created for you.

Do I have any say in the layout or color scheme of the site?

Yes. When we first begin working together you'll describe what you have in mind, and any specific details you have in want. For example if you know you want the background to be a light blue, or clouds, then that's what I'll do. If you want the links to be on the right, then that's where I'll put them. Once I get a sample layout created I'll give it to you for your opinion. If there's changes you want made I'll do 'em.

What file formats can I have on my site?

You can host any type of files on your site: photos, videos, MP3s, programs, etc. Anything that is legal under US law can be on your site. But you must have the right to distribute any files on your site. If your website is for your own band, you can host recordings of your performances, but you can't host someone else work without their permission. The same applies to photos and videos, anything that you have personally created, or that you directly own the copyright to, can be hosted.

Is there a limit to the number or size of the files I can host?

No. You can host any number of files, of any size. But if your website becomes very popular, and the traffic and bandwidth usages begins affecting the server's performance you may need to be moved to your own private server. This will cost you extra, but I will help you move your site and files to this new server. But only extremely large sites will need to be moved, you only need to worry about this if you're offering very large files or if you are running a very, very popular website.

If I need a page or file updated how long does it take?

I normally try to have simple webpage updates done within about 24 hours. Larger updates, or the addition of many new files may take longer. If I feel a specific update may take some time I'll let you know when you request it.

[1] If you're registering a new domain name, or updating an existing one, it may take 48/72 hours before it routes to one of my servers. This is out of my control, it has to do with the way DNS propagates through ISPs, there's absolutely nothing I can do about it.
